Give the animals at Slottsskogen Zoo a better life!
What is Slottsskogen Zoo?
Slottsskogen is a grand park in central Gothenburg. It is an appreciated site for recreation and sports, but also home to a lot of captive animals. As the park is run by the municipality, it is funded by tax money.
What is this campaign about?
This campaign is an initiative by GBGDA, Gothenburg Animal Rights Activists. We want the park to gradually terminate the zoo, and immediately rehome its penguins, seals and elks to better conditions. Our goal is to show to the politicians and other people in charge that there is a broad support amongst gothenburg citizens, and visiting tourists, to terminate Slottsskogen Zoo.
What is wrong with Slottsskogen Zoo?
The animals at Slottsskogen do not live a worthy life. Long-distance walkers such as the elk and deer, and deep divers such as seals are kept in ridiculously small enclosures. Pelicans and flamingoes are deprived of what might be their most valuable property: their ability to fly. Social animals are being kept solitarily, and their quarters are small and lack enrichments, especially during winter.
What puts Slottsskogen Zoo apart from other Swedish zoos is that there are no gates or fences around the park. The animals have no possibility to get away from the many visitors, and as it is a popular place for people to hang out, night and day, the animals are constantly under the stress caused by visitors.
